Kitesurfing is a relatively new sport which started
in the late 1990s. Initially it was done only by experienced
windsurfers but today many people learn to kitesurf without
ever going windsurfing.
What makes kitesurfing possibly is the special, inflatable kite
which is able to lift off into the air again even after crashing
into water. This is also what makes kitesurfing a challenging sport
and an exciting one for spectators to watch. You can see in the photo left that kite surfers can frequently be seen on Zandvoorts coast - as long as there is enough of a breeze.

The Netherlands attracts many kitesurfers because of the fairly regular winds which blow on the coastline and there are kitesurfing festivals, kitesurfing competitions and kitesurfing schools in many Dutch towns and beach resorts to serve this ever-growing and very popular sport.
Zandvoort beach plays host to many regular kitesurfers and also has a watersports club where you can learn kitesurfing as well as other water sports.
